Social Security Disability, or SSD, is based on how much you have paid into the Social Security system through payroll taxes during your working life (up to a maximum monthly benefit).
- Monthly benefits continue for as long as you are disabled from work. There is a five-month waiting period from the date of disability, so it is best to apply early.

Most people receive some back benefits once approved, as far back as 12 months prior to the date of application.
- You are eligible for Medicare benefits after you have been entitled to SSD for two years.
Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a safety net for people with limited assets, little income and little or no work history. It provides a fixed monthly benefit, retroactive only to the date of application. Those who qualify for SSI are immediately eligible for Medicaid coverage.
Benefits for Family Members
Spouses, ex-spouses and children may be entitled to Social Security benefits under the earnings of a qualified disability recipient:
- Dependent children may be eligible for benefits, up to a "family max."
- Disabled adult children may qualify for benefits under a parent's account.
- Widows and widowers can get survivor benefits at age 60, or between age 50 and 60 if they are themselves disabled.
- Mothers caring for children of the deceased recipient can receive benefits at any age.
- Divorced spouses may be eligible for benefits, depending on the length of the marriage and other criteria.
